Heritage Sentinel Call Notes – April 20

This week’s Sentinel Call was jam-packed. Listen to the Sentinel Call recording for more details on Democrats’ bills to pack the Supreme Court, and make Washington D.C. the 51st state. There are also action items below on saving our elections, two upcoming hearings on Capitol Hill, the confirmation of Vanita Gupta for Associate Attorney General, and a new Department of Education Rule on critical race theory.

Be sure to read all the way to the end! You can listen here.

Save Our Elections

This week Heritage Action sponsored a one-hour Just the News special on election integrity efforts happening all around the country. You can find the recording on Rumble and Facebook.

Be sure to check out Heritage Action’s action-centers on election integrity efforts happening in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

  • Florida: Sentinels in Florida should contact members of the state legislature and request they support HB7041 in the House and SB90 in the Senate.
  • Texas: Three bills in Texas together provide needed election safeguards for the state. They are: HB6, SB7, and HB2478. Lawmakers should support.
  • Arizona: Several bills have passed and been signed by the governor, but SB1713 and SB1485 remain. Read an op-ed from Jessica Anderson and Nathan Duell on why lawmakers should support these two bills in the AZ Capitol Times.
  • Wisconsin: Has several bills moving that would provide strong reforms.

Election Hearings

It’s not enough to get legislation across the finish line. It’s also critical that we defend it, ensure the public understands what is in it, and win the fight with the Left. Now that Georgia has passed election integrity legislation, the work continues to defend election integrity laws against attacks from the Left. Two hearings will be held this week on Capitol Hill.

  • Tuesday: The Senate Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing at 10:00am on “Jim Crow 2021: The Latest Assault on the Right to Vote.” The list of witnesses and livestream can be found here.
  • Thursday: The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties will hold a hearing at 10:00 a.m. on “Oversight of the Voting Rights Act: The Evolving Landscape of Voting Discrimination.” The livestream can be found here.

It’s key that conservatives set the record straight. Heritage Action has put together Myths vs. Facts for Georgia, Arizona, and Texas to help arm conservatives and the media with the facts.

Also upcoming is the markup for S.1, the Senate version of the “Corrupt Politicians Act.” While the date has continued to change, latest reports are that hearings will be the week of May 11th. We will keep Sentinels posted.

Vanita Gupta Nomination

This week the Senate is expected to vote on confirmation of Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General. As a lead advisor to the Attorney General, the nation’s top law enforcement officer for the Federal government, she would have influence on issues like community policing grants. While President Biden gives lip service to unity and bipartisanship, Gupta’s nomination continues a disturbing trend of bowing to the liberal wing of his party when making nominations for key posts in his administration. Gupta holds a number of radical views, including being a vocal supporter of defunding the police.

Republicans have unified in opposition to her nomination because of how extreme her positions are. Sentinels should continue to urge Democrat Senators to oppose her nomination. In a closely divided Senate, one Democrat NO vote could defeat her nomination.

>> Read and share Heritage Action’s key vote NO, and urge your Senators to vote NO on the confirmation of Vanita Gupta to Associate Attorney General.

CRT Rule

This week, the U.S. Department of Education announced a proposed rule with two new priorities for grant programs for K-12 educators. Under the new rule, the grants would prioritize recipients that use critical race theory. Critical race theory holds that America is systemically racist, and anyone who thinks differently, children included, are part of the problem—whether students know it or not. You can read more from The Heritage Foundation’s Jonathan Butcher on the host of problems with this proposed rule.

>> Take Action: Submit a public comment explaining your opposition to the proposed priorities for the American History and Civics Education programs. The full text of the two priorities and the form to comment can be found here.
